BONIFACIO "BONI" MOTAR MALAPAD May 10, 1931 - July 29, 2004 Bonifacio passed away last Thursday at Riverview Health Centre after a lengthy illness. He was born in Apitong Boac, Marinduque, Philippines as the youngest child of Ricardo and Aqualina Malapad. Boni was predeceased by his wife Elisa in 1986; brothers, Pablo, Antero, Solomon; and sisters, Valentina and Juanita. He is survived by his son Bemmy, Alma, Ebony (Brent), Bonily (Juvy), Junel (Donna) and Maggie; grandchildren, Eric, Abrelyn, Ivory, Shane, Renn, Melody, Kayla and Emily; sister Adelaida (Zosimo) and extended family. On October 7, 1956 Pop married Elisa Magbanua in a double wedding ceremony alongside his future brother and sister-in-law, Domingo and Celia. Afterwards, they settled in Manila. In August 1973, the family and their five children moved to Winnipeg. In the presence of family and friends, Pop and Mom renewed their vows on their 25th Wedding Anniversary in October 1981 at the Fort Garry Hotel. Throughout the years Boni was an active member of various community organizations including C.E.D.A., Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg, and the Provincial NDP. Following his heart surgery in 1994, Pop joined the Winnipeg YMCA and could often be found walking laps on the track or splashing around during water aerobics. Pop was an outgoing social man who loved meeting new people, making new friends and dancing (often with a beer bottle on his head!). He also loved to spend his time gardening, reading and going for walks. He was a strong, courageous determined man who lived, laughed and loved life. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pops memory can be made to YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, 3550 Portage Ave., R2K 0Z8 or to CancerCare Manitoba. A special thank you to the staff at both Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre Wing 3E for their professionalism, patience and empathy. Lamay will take place on Thursday, August 5 and Friday, August 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Prayers will be at 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 7:00 p.m. Friday.
